Her moment to escape and break free had finally come a few days after getting stuck in the window screen. It was the middle of the afternoon, and Mama had just come back from the grocery store with bags and bags of things. As she was carrying a load in from the car, the phone rang. Mama answered it quickly, plopping the groceries on the counter. It must have been something important because she became totally involved in the conversation. Mama didn’t realize that she’d left the door open.

Hesitantly, Kimba peeked out and saw that beyond the door sat the car with the trunk still up. Beyond the car, the garage was also still open. Kimba gulped. She was looking at a straight shot open to the big wide world. She could smell the grass and the fresh air. Freedom was staring her in the face.

Standing a few feet away from Mama, Kimba could see her path clearly: out the door, past the car, out of the garage, and straight on to freedom. It was too easy. She glanced up at Mama, her back turned now, speaking excitedly into the phone, completely unaware of the daring plot unfolding behind her.

This was Kimba’s chance.

She glanced around to see if anyone else was watching. Kimba noticed Miss Fatty Cat in the living room off to one side, hunkered down, observing her. Was she going to try to stop her? Would she run out too? Kimba didn’t dare make a noise to ask.

Kimba fixed her gaze on her line of escape, gathering all of her courage and determination. Mama’s “No, No Baby” rumbled in her head. But she wasn’t a baby now. The time to claim her destiny had come. She was a free-born cat. Time to be free!

Kimba crouched like a tiger—like a lion. Her back end waggled side to side in anticipation. Then, like a flash of white lightning, she dashed straight through the door, past the car, and out into the world. Miss Fatty Cat did not follow her.

The moment Kimba hit the driveway, she was shocked to find that things were not as she had expected. This was not a cool morning, like she had felt through the window a few days back. The air was hot and wet and felt heavy around her. She squinted her sensitive eyes and tried to look at the sky, but it was huge and bright and blinding. The next moment she became painfully aware that the driveway under her feet was HOT. Not warm and cozy like the sun felt through the window. Burning hot! Not sure where else to go, she scampered off into the grass on the far side of the house, out of view from the doorway.

The grass was much cooler under her feet, but it was not as soft as she had imagined. It was mostly crunchy feeling, more like litter than a blanket. She tried to cool her burning paw pads with some gentle licks, but they were terribly sore.
